After several days of being carted around cities with us, we decided that it was time to do something primarily for Thomas. Back home, Thomas loves going into the pet shop and looking at the fish with their bright colours and lights, so seeing as we were passing Monterey and it was also my birthday, we felt a family trip to the famous aquarium was a must.

Monterey itself is a lovely little town. It was quiet when we visited in November but I imagine that it gets very crowded mid summer. We had a lovely fish meal at a little place called Fish Hopper that did amazing calamari.

The aquarium is well set up for families. Thomas was a little young really to get the full benefit of the place but he still loved looking at the fish, jellyfish, penguins and seals. In particular he absolutely loved a glass room they have where waves rush over the roof about you. There are also huge play and explore areas for kids including a baby room with textures and fish themed things to investigate. He loved having a crawl around and it was enjoyable. With older children it would be very easy to spend an entire day there learning about the marine conservation they do and learning in the touch pools.

It was good to make the stop and spoil Thomas a little bit. He has been so good on the trip so far and is over his jet lag now. We are getting into our stride with this travelling now.
